February Reading Project

The February reading project consists of a book recommendation to be posted to the class reading blog. Students can access the reading blog with their Spyponders Google Drive username and password. More information on the blog post may be found below.

Please have your child complete this form and return it to me so that I can verify that he or she has selected an appropriate nonfiction book.

This is an optional organizer that does not need to be handed in.

Classroom Update: January 29, 2016

We’ve just wrapped up our realistic fiction unit in reading. Our next unit is on nonfiction books. We’ll be studying the unique features of informational texts.

In math, we continue to explore area and perimeter.

In social studies, we read about the Pilgrims’ journey on the Mayflower. We read the Mayflower Compact and wrote about the significance of this document.

In writing, students have moved on to the next phase of drafting their informational books.

Classroom Update: 1/17/16

In reading, students have chosen a realistic fiction book for independent reading. They are working on crafting book recommendations for these texts.

We've started a new social studies unit on the Pilgrims. We've begun by reading about the Pilgrims journey on the Mayflower.

In math, we've reviewed telling time to the minute and practiced problems involving elapsed time. You can support your child at home by asking them to read the time on an analog clock.

In writing, students are adding to their informational books. They are incorporating nonfiction text features such as a glossary, index, table of contents, headings, diagrams, and sidebars.

In Writing, students continue to draft their informational books, focusing on organizing their writing into paragraph structure.

In Math, students wrote their own multiplication and division story problems. Next week, we’ll begin a new unit on area and perimeter; however, we’ll continue to revisit multiplication and division concepts throughout the year.

In Science, we conducted a final test on students’ cart designs. We are wrapping up this current science unit and will begin a social studies unit on the Pilgrims next week.
