Optional Math Challenge: Due 3/28

Click here to access the optional homework math challenge, "Stamps and Sand Dollars."

Classroom Update: 3/18/16

In science, we've been studying properties of water with many hands-on experiments! Last week, we examined the absorbency of various materials. For example, we tested how much water a sponge can soak up. This week, we've been exploring water temperature. Our focus question this week was, "What happens when water gets hot? What happens when it gets cold?" To answer this question, students even built their own thermometers! We'll continue to study water and its properties next week.

In writing, students have begun another persuasive piece. Currently, they are working on writing persuasive petitions.

In math, we have been working on strategies for identifying equivalent fractions. We used visual models such as drawings and number lines to determine equivalency. In addition, we began to identify patterns among equivalent fractions. For example, we noticed that for fractions equivalent to one-half, the numerator is half the denominator.

We're currently transferring over to a binder system in math. This new system will support students in meeting our school organization goals. As a results, students will be bringing home their old math folders next week.

In reading, we have begun a unit on fantasy. Students are reading fantasy books such as Bunnicula, My Father's Dragon, The Great Cheese Conspiracy, and The Chocolate Touch in guided reading groups. A secondary goal that we're working on is strengthening our written responses to reading.

Lastly, we engaged in several activities to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day this week. Students built fraction rainbows and wrote festive limericks. I loved reading the creative poems students came up with!
